I still can’t fix this because trying to get the rockers in the right position to torque them down is a nightmare.
I can’t have Pap over to help us fix it, because Dad’s been in contact with at least two people with the COVID, and I’ve been around Dad, and Pap has Stage IV COPD, a collapsed lung, and other issues.
I’ve tried the TDC method, I’ve tried waiting until the rods and springs quit moving to get it on the round part of the cam lobe, none of it is easy to figure out.
All of this because I’m an idiot who thought rockers weren’t supposed to have play in them. Should have just left it the fuck alone.

They’re not suppose to have play. If it’s using hydraulic lifters. Otherwise, yeah, g et out the feeler gauges.

Really? See, that’s what I mean lol. Everything is contradicting everything else I read or hear. I’ve heard you’re supposed to be able to very slightly wiggle the rocker side to side.
I’m ordering a piston stop. Probably won’t help much but it’ll be a tool to have, it’s cheap, and Summit is still shipping orders.

Makes a big difference if it’s a hyd (no lash, but preload depending on lifters ) or solid cam (hot, cold lash specs from cam card ). And of course what rockers you have. All assuming you have the right length pus hrods... A fee ler gauge and patience are your friends...

It takes some patience and some math. Century performance has a great write-up on it. Lots of youtubes too. Just be patient and spend an evening reading/watching how-to’s.
YOU CAN DO IT!

I’m pretty sure it’s hydraulic, 98% sure I got the right pushrods (I went to a local parts shop my grandfather has done business with for years, and gave the owner the old bent ones to base it off of- went a little longer based on them being bent making them shorter).
Pap probably has a feeler gauge somehwere but I have no idea how to use one.
Patience was never a possibility lol.

But math makes my head hurt!

This video shows how my dad taught me to do hydraulic lifters . I’m not saying it’s right, just that it’s how I was taught. I never have a fancy marked balancer like that but I don’t think it’s mandatory to find the compression TDC for each cylinder.

The write- up mentioned elsewhere is good especially if it’s more of a stock-ish build. Hopefully they’re right, otherwise it will be a problem... Gotta learn some patience!

I am not sure what you mean by “torque them down”. Are you talking about setting valve clearance, or installing the valve train in a (presumably) overhead valve head without bending or braking anything? In any event, there are usually numerous forum discussions and YouTube videos. Keep watching until they make sense or you find one or two that make sense to you.
